Kevin Smith Takes On The Suicide Squad

The August 1, 2016 World Premiere in New York City for Suicide Squad was attended by our founder, Kevin Smith, along with his daughter Harley Quinn Smith. Kevin Smith's followers on social media were given some insight into the night in the hours and days that followed the premiere..

As the night went on there were clear indications that Kevin may have had a good time watching Suicide Squad, as evidenced in a tweet that soon followed the screening.

It turns out Kevin Smith and Suicide Squad's Writer/Director, David Ayer, had a mutual moment of admiration, of which we caught a glimpse of the following day via Smith's Instagram account.

I look up to @suicidesquadmovie maker #DavidAyer. His #endofwatch, shot with a mixture of media including dashboard & body cams, was the work of a true filmmaker. And I don't know how he got me to love a tank movie, but #fury is another amazing Ayer effort. When I heard he was shepherding a cinematic #suicidesquad, my already-high interests in a @dccomics movie shot over the top: what would a gritty guy like Dave do with the likes of #Deadshot & #HarleyQuinn? Well I think he made magic and did #dccomics proud. The #Squad movie doesn't look like any other comic book flick I've ever seen. The periodic use of both #Batman and the #joker as background characters instead of the usual leads was thrilling and felt like our first real glimpse at an interconnected #dceu. The cast is top notch but Harley, as expected, steals the show. The #jokerandharley beats are simply wonderful for a longtime fan to watch and make you immediately wanna see the all-Harley movie they already announced. Throwaway moments made me so happy (like Katana and her Soultaker sword) but this flick as a whole had me smiling the whole time. Thanks to her name, my kid @harleyquinnsmith_ was already on board for this movie - and she loved it (like LOVED it). I'll be heading back to see it again tonight so expect a brand new #FatManOnBatman review soon. #KevinSmith

Kevin was also able to share a great moment from later in the night, as well, when his daughter Harley Quinn Smith was able to meet the actress that brought her namesake to life on the big screen, Margot Robbie.

When @harleyquinnsmith_ met the real #HarleyQuinn! @margotrobbie reduced my kid to tears last night simply by existing. I don't think I've ever been as happy for anything in life as #HarleyQuinnSmith was to talk to #margotrobbie at the @suicidesquadmovie premiere. And our cinematic Harleen couldn't have been classier or more gracious as she engaged with a big fan who gushed about the movie (I was doing the same thing to #davidayer: his #suicidesquad is a beautiful, visionary, fun-ass film). I spent the last hours of my 45th year with real life versions of some of my favorite @dccomics characters, but the best present I got for the start of my 46th birthday (which is today) was the look of joy on my kid's face as she met her idol. Tonight, the kid and I show @yogahosers to 1300 people in #RedBank NJ at the #countbasietheatre and shoot the whole thing for #ComicBookMen. It will be an amazing memory for Harley one day - but today, the only memory she's replaying over and over is the memory of meeting Margot. Later, via an article and video on comicbook.com, we found out about the wonderful moment where Kevin Smith and Suicide Squad's Writer and Director, David Ayer, went complete fanboy on one another. David Ayer was even telling Kevin, "I watch your shows on youtube, I watch all that shit, your podcast..." just as Kevin was extolling his admiration for Ayer's other films.

After the great time that seemed to be had by all involved, it was nice to see that the entire experience resulted in a fun night AND a fun review by Smith himself for his YouTube channel about Suicide Squad.
