Kevin Smith gave a casual review of the new Ghostbusters film to the audience attending the 250th episode of Hollywood Babble-On on Friday, July 9th, at the Hollywood Improv comedy club.
Smith, who attended the film’s premiere at Hollywood’s historic TCL Chinese Theatre (aka Grauman’s Chinese Theater), described the film as “totally fun.”
“It’s very kid friendly. Like the original Ghostbusters, very kid friendly,” Smith said in response to HBO cohost Ralph Garman’s question as to whether or not children would see the new film.
“There were little kids in my theater dancing, dressed up like Ghostbusters; singing the song and dancing,” said Smith. “And this gets even more tender; they were little girls. So you were sitting there going like, ‘Well there it is man, the power of the flick.’ And it hadn’t even started yet.”
Smith said all the performances delivered in the film were “really good.” Nodding to an Easter Egg within the film, Smith expounded on a special cameo from the late Harold Ramis, co-creator of the Ghostbuster franchise, “There’s a bust of somebody in the background, and it’s Harold Ramis.”
Pleased with the performance and cast, Smith specifically sang the praises of one Australian actor in the film:
You know who’s fucking awesome in it? Thor [Chris Hemsworth]. Oh my god! He’s so funny in the movie! They should make him be even funnier in those fucking Marvel movies. He’s got a gift for comedy. In this movie he’s the dumb blonde. It’s a one-note joke, but he fucking pulls the taffy on it. He made me laugh out loud quite a few times. Fucking Thor! Go figure, man! God of Thunder? God of Chuckles, that’s what I say.
Smith, a long-time fan of the Ghostbusters franchise, had hopes for the direction of the new film:
As a fan, I would have preferred it if it would have tied in to the other ones. It is a complete stand-alone film. And it’s not like I’m fucking like, ‘Oh my childhood has been fucking rebooted.’ Not at all. But as a guy who likes comics, and shit, I have my own interconnected movie universe – two of them – I would have preferred it if it was like, ‘Hey! We got this from these guys.’ At one point I heard that Bill Murray was going to play a ghost of Peter Venkman and I was like that would have been so fucking metal and shit! That does not happen. It’s not a complaint, and I don’t want people writing up like, ‘He fucking hated it!’ I just would have preferred if they would have tied the movies together. For me, that would have been fucking cool.
Smith attended the red carpet premiere with wife Jenn and daughter Harley. Father and daughter posed for photos on the red carpet. Smith told the Hollywood Babble-On audience about the call he received from his daughter after the photos were posted online, “‘Oh Jesus fucking Christ!’ – she curses a lot – I don’t know where she gets it at all… I guess some website put the pictures up of me and Harley like, ‘Kevin Smith and his wife.’ So she’s like, ‘Eww they think we’re dating!’”
Additionally, while on the red carpet, Smith was able to pose for a photo with one of his own personal heroes, Dan Aykroyd.
